We can all agree that 2024 was officially The Year of Adam Brody, when we as a society celebrated Seth Cohen’s natural evolution into Hot Rabbi Noah Roklov (from “The O.C.” and “Nobody Wants This,” respectively, though you’d be forgiven for thinking this NJB is either of these characters IRL).
With that in mind, it’s truly bashert that this year we are being gifted with a true Chrismukkah, as the first night of Hanukkah falls on Christmas Day (Dec. 25). This last happened in 2005, and won’t happen again until 2035! (One can also argue that it’s Chrismukkah when the first night of Hanukkah falls on Christmas Eve — Dec. 24 — and thankfully that will happen much sooner, in 2027.)
The concept of Chrismukkah has been around for a long time, but it was formally introduced into The Culture in 2003 on “The O.C.,” when Adam Brody’s character Seth Cohen explained how his interfaith family celebrated, yes, you guessed it, both Christmas and Hanukkah. “Now, if my sense of the cultural zeitgeist is accurate — and I do believe it is — this is the year that Chrismukkah sweeps the nation,” he proclaimed in his fancy living room, while bossing his family around and insisting he was “supervising.”
Sweep the nation Chrismukkah did, and we’re still invested in it. So this year, give the gift of Chrismukkah to everyone you love who celebrates both winter holidays. Or just buy something cute for yourself if you happen to be a delightful half-half situation! Merry Chrismukkah to all, and oy to the world, indeed!
