It’s impossible to talk about Jews in the music industry without kvelling over the sheer number of talented Jewish sibling bands. Haim is perhaps the most popular, but there’s also A-WA (featuring a completely different set of Haim sisters), AJR, Bailen and Lawrence. While Lawrence has since expanded to feature six other members, the group started as just a pop-duo comprised of siblings Clyde and Gracie Lawrence.
In the last few years, Lawrence’s popularity has taken off and Gracie was recently cast in a high profile HBO TV show! Here are 18 things to know about her.
1. Gracie was born on March 16, 1997 to a Jewish family in New York.
2. She’s an Aries.
3. Her father is filmmaker Marc Lawrence. He’s best known for writing and executive producing “Miss Congeniality.”
4. Gracie and her brother Clyde have been writing and performing music since childhood. Their first venues were, “small cafés and clubs around lower Manhattan, and of course, in their living room at their grandparents’ request.”
5. She made her Broadway debut in 2009! She played Laurie Morton in the revival of Neil Simon’s “Brighton Beach Memoirs.”
“It’s so inspiring and moving at a young age to see someone who doesn’t have to prove anything constantly trying to improve their own work because they still care enough to try to make it better, even if everyone else already loves it,” Gracie wrote of getting to work with Jewish playwright Neil Simon.
6. Gracie graduated from The Dalton School in 2015. She then attended Brown University starting in 2016, but ultimately dropped out to pursue being in Lawrence full-time.
“I went back for a week my second year, and I was gone every other day,” Gracie reflected in 2022, adding that “trying to do college as a side hustle is really not how it works.”
7. Lawrence released its first album”Breakfast” in 2016.
8. The band has since released three other studio albums: “Living Room,” “Hotel TV” and “Family Business.”
9. Lawrence often performs and records acoustic or “acoustic-ish” versions of their songs for their YouTube Channel.
10. As an actress, Gracie has also worked in movies and television. She’s had roles in “Did You Hear About the Morgans?,” “The Americans,” “Younger” and “Billions.”
11. According to Neranenah Arts, Gracie and Clyde are inspired by Carole King and Jerry Seinfeld because of their “New York, Jewish storytelling.”
