18 Things to Know About Jewish Writer and Actress Cazzie David

She does a great impression of her dad, the legendary Jewish comedian Larry David.

We here at Hey Alma have been singing Cazzie David’s praises basically ever since our site began. Because, seriously, what’s not to love? Cazzie is just as hilarious and weird as her father, the legendary Jewish comedian and “Seinfeld” creator Larry David. But instead of work which reflects the neuroses of a middle-aged to old Jewish man, Cazzie’s work explores the neuroses of what it means to be a 20-something Jewish woman.

Here are 18 things to know about her.

1. Cazzie David was born on May 10, 1994 in Boston to Larry and Laurie David.

2. She’s a Taurus!

3. Cazzie takes after her dad. “My sister [Romy] and mom are very similar, and my dad and I are very similar. Both my parents are extremely neurotic in different ways,” she revealed in 2017.

4. She’s named after former New York Knicks star Cazzie Russell. “My dad is that much of a Knicks fan that he had to give me the craziest name ever,” she told Coveteur in 2017.

5. “Anxiety drives my life and every choice I make is because of it,” Cazzie told Good Morning America in 2020. In the past, she’s tried Zoloft, Xanax, therapy and spent time at in-patient mental health facilities to try to manage her anxiety.

6. Her father believes she inherited the anxiety from him.

“We have the same low opinion of ourselves,” he told the L.A. Times in 2020. “We are in a contest as to who is crazier. I can’t smoke weed because of what it does to me physically, but she can. So I said, ‘There’s proof — I’m definitely crazier.’ And then I find out she can’t sing when she’s by herself, because she’s too self-conscious. So now I think she wins.”

7. She’s been friends with Jewish actress Molly Gordon since childhood!

8. Her first-ever TV appearance was on “Hannah Montana” with her dad and sister.

9. She graduated from Emerson College in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in writing for film and television.

10. Cazzie dated comedian Pete Davidson for two and a half years from roughly 2016 until 2018. She spiraled after the break up, prompting her dad to pull her out of bed and say: “CAZZIE, COME ON! YOUR ANCESTORS SURVIVED THE HOLOCAUST!

As of 2020, Cazzie and Pete are friends again.

11. Her favorite TV show is, unsurprisingly “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” “How embarrassing is that?” she said, in conversation with W Magazine. “I have to hide if I’m watching it when someone is coming over. It’s so weird if I’m watching it.”

12. According to her dad, Cazzie is “mortified” about being a nepo baby.

“The worst thing about being privileged is that people just genuinely hate you for it. It’s a really good burn. It totally shuts you up. Yeah, I am. I f— suck,” Cazzie said in an interview.

13. She does a killer impression of her dad. Just watch:

14. Cazzie wrote a collection of essays in 2020 called “No One Asked For This” and is a writer for the digital weekly newsletter Air Mail, founded by Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter.

We saw Cazzie as a Nora [Ephron] for a new generation,” Graydon said of Cazzie. “She’s got her father’s DNA in her writing and her mother’s energy in her spirit.”

15. She co-wrote and co-starred in a web series called “EIGHTY-SIXED.” “EIGHTY-SIXED,” wrote Anna Diamond in ‘The Atlantic,’ “clearly comes from the ‘Curb’ school of dry, cynical humor.”

16. Cazzie played Jayme Hargreeves in Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy.” Please enjoy these BTS photos, courtesy of Cazzie:

17. According to her friend Owen Thiele, Cazzie is great at predicting trends. She even made this handy-dandy chart so you can create your own trend!

18. With “I Love You Forever,” Cazzie’s feature film directing debut, she and co-writer and co-director Elisa Kalani “wanted to make a rom-com for our generation, something that just felt relatable to the dating pool now.

“While doing both of those things, we kind of came to this realization that a rom-com can also include meeting someone who ends up being toxic,” Cazzie told IndieWire. “We satirized the love-bombing, and that became our movie.”

Bonus: The movie co-stars Jewish actress Sofia Black-D’Elia.
