There are a lot of reasons to love Lena Dunham’s new Netflix show “Too Much.” It’s bitingly funny and heartfelt. The ensemble cast is pitch perfect together. The depiction of Jewish women is complex and engages with stereotypes without buying into them. There’s a weird little dog! And the fashion? The fashion goes hard.
Like Fran Fine before her, “Too Much” main character Jess Salmon (Megan Stalter) is a Jewess whose personality explodes through her impeccable wardrobe. Jess is the kind of fashionista who wears a pink gingham skirt suit to work, a metallic teal minidress to a wedding at an English manor home, a lacy sailor dress for a night at the pub and a ruffly Peter Pan-style nightgown, matching with her dog Astrid, to bed. She clearly isn’t afraid to make a statement with her looks, and I think we all have a lot to learn from her sartorial intuition.
So if you’re looking for a primer on how to dress like Jess, you’ve come to the right place.
In general, I think the key to dressing like Jess is wearing what makes you feel good, bright, big and special. Don’t be afraid that your outfit is “too much.” More is actually more! Forget that old Coco Chanel adage. (She was literally a Nazi, anyway.) Put on that extra piece of jewelry or accessory and work it.
More specifically, some visual elements Jess tends to lean into are ruffles, lace, colorful patterns, voluminous hair, a red lip and matching with her dog. Mainstays of her wardrobe include Mary Janes, hair bows, pastel tights, a rabbit charm necklace, chunky hoops, bralettes and many, many nightgowns. Her closet includes lots of Fashion Brand Company, as well as Rosette NYC, Celia B and If Only If Nightwear. And, for me personally, the brands Batsheva, Tyler McGillivary, Betsey Johnson and Dyspnea just feel like they have a place in her stylistic rotation.
Below I’ve compiled a shopping list of all the items you’ll need to dress like Jess (and Astrid) from “Too Much.” Where I haven’t been able to locate or pinpoint exact pieces from the show, I’ve gathered dupe pieces which emulate the original in style, design, character or all of the above.
Happy shopping!

Jess wears this nightgown multiple times onscreen. She dons it while doomscrolling Wendy Jones' social media and later when the pair meet up IRL. Alas, Astrid's tiny matching nightgown is bespoke.

This skirt is featured in an early episode of "Too Much." Not only is it so cute, but I can confirm that Rosette NYC skirts are very comfy and generally pretty stretchy.

Jess's number one accessory is a silver rabbit charm necklace. She wears it with basically every outfit! Consider it a good luck charm.

This sweater is featured when Jess and Felix spend a cozy night in together. It's the one kind-of-neutral-toned item in her closet, but it's still adorable.

This is a dupe for Astrid's iconic cloud sweater. If you have a smaller-sized furry friend, I cannot recommend this product enough.

At Jonno and Ann's dinner party, Jess wears a gorgeous green beaded dress with a lace-up back. I immediately thought of this made-to-order piece from Australian brand Dyspnea. It comes in a handful of colors, or you can request a custom color. Like say, green.

Jess often styles her hair into wavy curls. But when she does opt for a half-up, half-down look, she sometimes adds a bow. This one from Urban Outfitters comes in ivory and black, and you'll need both.

No, this is not the Celia B Flax Trench Coat that Jess wears in "Notting Kill." If you can actually find that being sold online somewhere, I applaud you. But this colorful Rachel Antonoff slicker is a more than suitable dupe. (And yes, I see the irony of including an Antonoff on this list.)

When Jess and Ann do coke in the bathroom during the dinner party, the latter then pulls this lipstick out of the medicine cabinet. I have to imagine this is the product Jess wears throughout the series. It's so pigmented!

Tights are key to many of Jess's looks! Throughout the show she wears white, light pink and periwinkle hose. If you have to pick two, go with white and pink.

Jess's backpack is the Saint Laurent Metallic Buffalo Star Hunting Backpack in Silver Red, but this Jansport is only slightly different. Plus it's so tiny and cute!

I cannot for the life of me find the original Jess wears to Felix's friend's wedding. I have to imagine it's vintage or made by "Too Much" costume designer Arielle Cooper-Lethem. That said, this dress is stylistically very close with it's metallic material and ruffled skirt.

Jess switches between a deeper red blush and a pinkier blush, and the more fuschia color sticks out in my mind. This shade of Glossier Cloud Paint is the one this author uses religiously.

Jess's actual phone case is pink and red shapes. But since I couldn't find that one, I loved this option which references hair ribbons.

Throughout the show, Jess consistently serves business bitch. I adore the pink gingham set she wears to work after spending the night in the hospital. The entire set is quite pricey (see below), so feel free to pick which item is your favorite.

Is a mini skirt ever workplace appropriate? When it's as cute as this one is, I say follow Jess's lead.

Jess is seemingly always wearing a bralette. Yes, this is technically a bikini top. But I can clearly picture Jess in it.

The "They Can't Lick Our Dick" t-shirt on "Too Much" is either vintage or bespoke. Still, the phrase comes from a real Nixon button and there are a few novelty tees out there featuring the image. This is my favorite.

There are a few jackets in Jess's closet, but the off-white shag cropped jacket is the one she seems to go for most often. It's so '70s, so fuzzy and so chic.
