This timeline of Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost was originally published May 3rd, 2018. In light of their engagement news, we’re updating the timeline.
First: Yes, they’re dating. Movie star and Jewish bombshell Scarlett Johansson and Saturday Night Live’s co-head writer and “Weekend Update” host Colin Jost are dating.
Second: They recently made their relationship “red carpet official” (who even knows what that means?! ) at the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War.
Where did this relationship begin? Why do they feel like a weirdly mismatched couple? Why has it taken them so long to be in public? Let’s dive in…
Rumors
March 11, 2017: Scarlett hosts SNL for the fifth time. Notably, she plays Ivanka Trump in a fake ad for a fragrance called “Complicit.” Her impression of Ivanka sets up her return later in the season, where rumors of her hook-up with Colin start.
Sometime before May (and after March): Kate McKinnon sets up Scarlett and Colin. According to Life & Style, “The pair were actually set up by Colin’s SNL co-star Kate McKinnon… and had kept the romance hush-hush since then….Kate was the one who played Cupid and pushed Scarlett and Colin to go on their first date.”
May 21, 2017: Scarlett makes a cameo in the season finale of SNL’s 42nd season. She reprises her role as Ivanka and appears in the cold open. But who cares about the show, because Page Six reported that at the after-party, Scarlett and Colin made out! Gasp! A witness told them, “Scarlett and Colin were making out at the bar at the ‘SNL’ season finale party at 30 Rock . . . They would make out a bit, then go back to talking. They were at the bar in front of everyone . . . they made out at least twice.” At least TWICE!
Meanwhile, E! claims that their “fling” started when Scarlett hosted back in March, quoting an “insider” who said, “Saturday night wasn’t the first time. It’s been going on for a bit.”
June 13, 2017: They’re spotted on a date. Page Six calls it a “hot date” (chill, Page Six). The only intel about the date is that they held hands and had drinks. No pictures, unfortunately. Why was this news?
June 20, 2017: A week later, Scarlett is pictured holding hands with Kevin Yorn (her lawyer). See the pictures here. Hmm….
July 3, 2017: Page Six says Colin and Scarlett are back on! A rekindled romance! (Rekindled after a month?) This time they’re spotted gettin’ cozy in the Hamptons. Daily Mail has the photos.
July 4, 2017: A day later, People reports on Kevin (the lawyer) and Scarlett’s apparently very on-and-off relationship, saying he’s TOTALLY OKAY with Scarlett dating Colin. “Kevin and Scarlett are by no means headed for the aisle but they have a lot of fun when they’re together. They’ve known each other for forever. He’s a fun intellectual and she clearly loves that about him…He’s the kind of guy who would step aside if Scarlett found a serious kind of love again. He’d want her to be happy and find a partner if that’s what she ultimately wanted.”
August 17, 2017: Scarlett and Colin make an appearance at Dave Chapelle’s 44th birthday, according to Entertainment Tonight. They showed up together and left together!
September 4, 2017: Page Six continues with the breaking news. They report that Scarlett and Colin were spotted kissing in the rain (aw, romance) at a Labor Day party attended by a random smattering of famous people (Diana Ross, Jon Bon Jovi, Gayle King, Katie Couric, Senator Chuck Schumer… you know, the usual crowd).
Dating? Maybe?
September 17, 2017: At the Emmys (which Colin is hosting this year with Weekend Update co-host Michael Che, FYI), Colin speaks out on their relationship to Entertainment Weekly. He says, “She’s wonderful. She’s working, so otherwise, she’d be here. She’s pretty cool… It’s hard to have a lot of complaints, she’s pretty awesome.” He also explained, interestingly, that they met when she was a writer on the show the first time she hosted. WAY BACK IN JANUARY 2006! (Colin was hired in 2005.)
September 18, 2018: Gossip blogger Enty posts this blind item (blind items = unnamed celebrities): “This late night actor looks kind of foolish when he is talking about love and how much he cares for the actress he thinks is his girlfriend at the same time she is having room service in a hotel with another guy she is seeing.” Sounds like Colin was more into it than Scarlett…. 🤔🤔
October 1, 2017: SNL premieres and there is a big after-party. Scarlett and Colin arrive together, and then there’s a series of photos of Scarlett sitting in the car waiting for Colin.
November 11, 2017: Daily Mail publishes some photos of Colin and Scarlett sharing a “passionate kiss” in NYC “following months of romance rumors.” See the photos here.

November 22, 2017: Scarlett and Colin celebrate her 33rd birthday in East Hampton, and reportedly introduce each other to their respective families. Major!
In Public
November 30, 2017: They make their first public appearance together, at the 2017 Museum Gala at American Museum of Natural History.

December 16, 2017: Kevin Hart hosts SNL, and the show ends with the cast ice skating at Rockefeller Center. Blink and you miss it, but Colin and Scarlett are there, skating, holding hands. (You can see them standing next to each other at the start, skate by at 0:41 and 1:09.)
March 19, 2018: Engagement rumors! Scarlett shows up at the SNL afterparty wearing a diamond ring. It wasn’t on her wedding figure, but Daily Mail swears it “looked like an engagement ring” and she was “trying to conceal it.”
April 23, 2018: Avengers: Infinity War premieres, and Scarlett brings Colin to the red carpet.
They actually looked really cute. Has writing this timeline made me more supportive of this relationship? They seem private and into each other? And he seems to be truly in love with her?!
Oh wait, no, still weird.

May 7, 2018: Scarlett and Colin attend the Met Gala together. Scarlett makes a statement by wearing Marchesa. (Marchesa was co-founded by Harvey Weinstein’s ex-wife, Georgina Chapman.)
July 2018: Michael Che pranks Colin’s “intimate birthday dinner” by sending a clown to the table. He posts a screenshot of Scarlett looking amused next to Colin in a balloon hat.
September 17, 2018: They go to the Emmys together!
