There are almost zero universal truths in Judaism. Jews have no uniform conception of matzah balls, let alone Torah. But I think in my 28 years of being Jewish I’ve finally discovered the one thing about Jewish culture that will always be the same. Are you ready?
It is always freezing in synagogue.
Whether it’s January or July, October or March, if your temple has an air conditioning system, odds are high that it is set to blast. No matter where you sit, there’s a biting draft. And all you can think about during the service — especially on Yom Kippur — is a searing cup of coffee to stop your teeth from chattering. (Who cares if it’s burnt, just as long as it’s hot!) Sounding familiar?
The only thing that has saved me from the icy grips of a synagogue sanctuary on a Rosh Hashanah morning is by adding a cozy cardigan to my High Holiday outfits. So if you’re looking to do the same (which I highly recommend), here are ten solid options to work with.
Happy shopping, happy (almost) High Holidays and stay warm, pals!
