Mazel Tov to Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe!

Finally, some good news.

Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe are engaged, and all is right in the world. Just kidding, absolutely nothing is right in the world, but at least Sue and Megan brought us a brief moment of much needed joy.

In a caption-less Instagram post on the evening Friday, October 30, Bird, an Israeli-American basketball player, posted a picture of Megan, an American soccer player, putting a ring on her finger:

The couple started dating in 2016; they met at the Rio Olympics during a “media day.” Bird said that Rapinoe “sauntered” into her DMs. (Really this whole interview about their dating origin story is so delightful.) In 2017, Bird came out in an ESPN profile and spoke publicly for the first time about her relationship with Rapinoe. In 2018, Bird and Rapinoe made history as the first gay couple on the cover (and inside) of ESPN‘s Body Issue. In 2019, Bird went viral for an essay titled “So the President F*cking Hates My Girlfriend.”

And in 2020, they have brought us great joy under quarantine — Sue gave Megan a haircut on Instagram Live, it was amazing — and used their platforms to constantly speak out for justice. Rapinoe spent the summer in the Wubble (the WNBA bubble) supporting Bird as she helped lead the Seattle Storm to the championship.

Between Bird and Rapinoe, they have five Olympic gold medals, four WNBA championships, two World Cups, and a bevy of other titles. They are, to put it simply, a power couple. And now — they’re adding wedding rings.

With their engagement, the internet erupted with nachas.

On Bird’s Instagram, Natalie Portman commented, “Mazal tov!!!!” (Fun fact: Portman and Bird went to high school together. Shout-out to Syosset High!!) Even presidential candidate Joe Biden tweeted congrats to the superstar pair, writing, “Love will always win. Congratulations, @S10Bird and @mPinoe!”

Their respective teams also celebrated:

(Bird and Rapinoe both play for Seattle clubs — Bird for the Seattle Storm, and Rapinoe for the OL Reign.)

Fans on twitter also celebrated the good news:
