Timothée Chalamet is on quite the press tour for “A Complete Unknown,” the Bob Dylan biopic in which he stars.
Last week, Timothée visited Minneapolis in Bob Dylan’s home state of Minnesota to attend a screening of the film and, apparently, hang out with the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gopher marching band. Later, he was a guest on ESPN’s College GameDay pre-show, where he promoted “A Complete Unknown” whilst demonstrating a surprising amount of knowledge about college football. And finally, at the New York City premiere of the movie, Timmy made waves on the red carpet in a deep-cut homage to Bob Dylan featuring blonde bangs.
The press tour rolled on this week when Timothée appeared on Theo Von’s popular podcast “This Past Weekend” and revealed a piece of information that had us scratching our heads. That is to say, Timmy told Theo Von that his childhood best friend was Brett Goldstein.
Wait… what?
28-year-old Timothée Chalamet was childhood best friends with the 44-year-old British-Jewish actor and comedian known for playing the hard-shelled, yet lovable Roy Kent on “Ted Lasso”? The two-time Emmy award winner known for his adoration of the Muppets? That Brett Goldstein?
Well, as it turns out, not quite.
After briefly discussing Timothée’s experience at a performing arts high school, Theo Von asked him who his best friend was growing up. Timothée balked at the question at first, seemingly suggesting that acting from such a young age meant that he didn’t have a lot of time for friends. He then finally responded, “Probably Brett Goldstein, you know.”
Von followed up, perhaps as confused as we were, “A kid in your building or someone from school?”
“No, he was a kid on the Upper West Side and my older sister [Pauline] was friends with his older sister, Brenna. And I think they still live there, Greg and Bess, those are his parents,” Timothée shared. “And Brett, that was my whole friend group and then they all — my whole friend group went to this school called Computer School and then I went to a school called Booker T. Washington so I lost my friend group there.”
Not us getting emotional about young Timothée losing all his friends, including a small Jewish boy from New York named Brett Goldstein, not the British actor Brett Goldstein. (The Brit grew up in London, and his sister is named Tara, not Brenna. Nor did he attend a school in the New York City education system. So yeah, it’s definitely not that Brett Goldstein.) Do you think Timmy and Brett went to b-mitzvah parties together? Celebrated Hanukkah or Passover together? Our hearts can’t take the thought!
That said, however, we would absolutely watch a TV show where a young Timothée Chalamet and famous Brett Goldstein are best friends. Someone should absolutely get on that.
